To be a Christian is to be at war – a war to rest in the right place. The world wants us to rest in and find satisfaction in everything but Jesus. So the enemy plants thoughts in our minds that line up with our sinful desires, and together they create an argument that easily becomes a stronghold. Paul says we've been given weapons that are powerful enough to tear down the argument and the stronghold.
Paul and Barnabas head into Lystra, and when the locals watch a lame man get up and walk in the power of God, they try to make sacrifices to them, thinking they are gods. Paul preaches to them, but before long, hostility arises and Paul is stoned and left for dead.
Jesus is about 30 years old, and ready to begin his ministry. The question is: Does he really know what he is here to do? Has he understood what his mission will be? The phrase "time will tell" isn't going to be helpful. Like a good teacher tests her pupils to learn what they know, Jesus gets a test to see what he knows about the mission.
The first step to persevering through hardship and trial is to remember the truth of the gospel. But there are practical things we can do daily as we endure.
